A portrait of the village well digger. BURKINA FASO.

Divining for water the traditional way and then hand digging the well was San’s profession. He would take up to two weeks digging slowly through the sunbaked stony ground to complete a typical ten meter deep well. San was always in high spirits even while working in temperatures reaching 45’C. I found his attitude to life inspirational.
